Friday, January 11. 2008Samsride Going National?
I should have posted here earlier, but Sam was featured back in December in the Georgia EMC magazine. That magazine goes out to over 1.5 million readers. That's has been our biggest press coverage to date. It was about a third of a page article with a picture of Sam and Barry in action.
You can see it HERE, if you missed it. But, I think it was that piece that may lead us to bigger and better things. I'm not sure I can go into the details now and would rather leave the official announcement for Sam to make, but just know that a national television talk show has requested that Sam appear on their show and talk about her ride. It's a show most have seen or are at least familiar with. I'm excited that Sam is getting this opportunity to take her message to more people. I had hoped to get a shot at a show like this, but the writer's strike has hurt those chances as most shows went to reruns. But now that a lot of shows are going back into production, there is the chance that we can get onto one or more of these shows. I'm sure when we have a date for a taping and an air date Sam will pass that info along to everyone. You better get your request in now for the personally autographed glossy 8x10's while you can... Sam may be too busy to get to those when Hollywood comes calling. -Tuck Another page, with pictures, from one of Sam's school visits during the ride is HERE. Sunday, December 2. 2007Update on Samantha
Well, we have just returned from yet another trip to St. Jude. We left Thursday evening and had surgery early Friday morning. Dr. Fleming had to repair her left eye lid because it wouldn't hold her eye in. He pulled the bottom lid up and then pulled the top down but then found out he didn't have enough skin so he had to borrow skin from her only ear. Her left eye is now patched so that the graft will lay flat for ten days to heal properly. The ear has about 6-8 stitches.
She did so well, though. As soon as she came out of the local, she was up and about. She had very little pain and only took one dose of regular Tylenol yesterday. We flew home last night. She is now in the Christmas shopping mood. We will have to go back to Memphis on the 9th to have it all looked at on the 10th, and if the graft is healed, she will get another eye. If not, we will have to wait another week. And so goes another Christmas season in the house of Gilley. Hope yours is much less complicated! Oh, on a side note, as usual, we now have more cute and sweet stories to tell. After we flew in, we decided to make a detour down Brainerd Road to go through the new Starbucks. As we passed Lanham's, I asked her if she wanted to stop and use her gift card that the church had given her for graduation. We are never that way together. So we turned around and went back. We had no more than entered the store when a lady approached us and talked to Sam about what an inspiration she was and how she had been following the website. I noticed that she had a Channel 3 shirt on. After we talked for awhile, she asked if she could buy Sam a Bible. I told her that she, of course, couldn't see a regular one and she said that it didn't matter, to just go back and pick whatever Sam wanted. So off they go to look at audio bibles. After much dicussion, they picked out an 80 CD version that is read by many famous actors. Now Sam can download it to her MP3 player and take it to New York with her. Now if that wasn't a God thing! Here we were, not even planning on going that way at all. It all happened so suddenly! After the lady left the store, one of the employees there told us that this woman always finds someone there to buy a bible for. We were in shock at all of it. This lady listens to God and obeys! Oh how I wish I would do that. We began to listen to it in the car, and it is truly awesome. You don't want to cut it off. Sam is so excited and I can't wait for her to finish it so that I can hear it too. And to think that this lady said Sam blessed her when she was blessing us! A perfect stranger to us! God is everywhere! So watch, it may happen to you! I hope it does. - Susie Wednesday, November 14. 2007Another Mention For Sam
A nice mention for Sam from the Memphis Velo website with some very good pictures of the team riding into Memphis.

Well, it’s over! I am able to sit down (no small feat) and give you a brief summary of our trip. It took a while to catch up on things at the office and recover some use of my legs.
Our send off spaghetti supper was a huge success with music, food, tributes, videos, and many friends, family and volunteers. We had fantastic weather, few mechanical problems and absolutely no accidents thanks to the hundreds of people dedicated to praying. We had a warming sun everyday of the trip with mornings just cool enough for a light jacket. Besides two flats, there were no problems with the bicycles and no one even came close to being in an accident despite heavy traffic in Murfreesboro, Nashville, and Memphis, even though most days we were on roads with 55 and even 65 MPH speed limits. There are many stories and I can’t wait to tell about people stopping us along the route as they saw Samantha on TV, or read about her in the paper. The momentum was high at our send off as (Congressman) Zach Wamp delivered a moving speech about Samantha. Then things just kept snowballing from there as more people heard about our ride. The days were very hectic, beginning at 7 a.m., with breakfast followed by Libby shuttling us from the RV to our starting point for the day. After filling water bottles and putting granola bars in our pockets, we began pedaling. Libby leap-frogged the riders all day in her car carrying water, tools and tubes and shooting pictures for the blog as she went ahead a few miles and waited on the team to pass then she would drive a few miles again and wait. When Austin and Steve were not riding with us, they were busy breaking down the camp and moving the RV another 40 to 50 miles closer to Memphis. They normally arrived at the next location and got set up only minutes before we arrived. The afternoon was filled with showers, washing clothes, adjusting bicycles, blog updates, uploading pictures, Ibuprofen, and setting up for the next day. Our pilots did a great job of powering the tandem and kept Samantha from getting too sore. We were always concerned about dehydration, soreness and exhaustion (for Samantha, not the pilots). I told the pilots that they were replaceable! Everyone did a great job and she is probably healthier and in better shape now than she has been in years. The highlight of the trip had to be the pilot’s dinner on Sunday night and the ride into downtown Memphis the next day. The pilot’s dinner was held at Dr. Lilly’s house, on the east side of Memphis, after the Sunday ride that put us just inside the city limits. We cooked out on her deck and told stories about our rides. Samantha gave the pilots a keepsake and told a funny story about each pilot. Monday’s ride was great as we met in Eads, Tennessee, with riders from the Memphis Hightailers club, many of our pilots, and five members of Memphis’ finest that escorted our group the final 36 miles. There were four motorcycle escorts and one police cruiser and they stopped traffic at every red light and cleared every intersection to allow Samantha’s parade to enter Memphis in style. One of the officers told Sam that they had practiced this several weeks earlier when some guy named Bush came to Memphis so they could get everything organized and then they would be ready when she arrived. Then the coup de grâce was when we stopped at Overton Park, where we met up with Samantha’s friend Ana. I took Ana from her wheelchair and placed her into a carriage that I pulled behind my bike for the ride from Overton Park to St. Jude Hospital. Ana has a rare disease that has left her blind and unable to walk because of brittle bones. She was determined to participate in the ride and pulling her seven miles was hardest thing and the best thing that I did (Look at Samantha’s tribute to Ana http://www.samslife.org/ana.php). The money is still coming in and I hope to make it to $50,000 as the total raised before its’ over. We are still getting funds in and we are somewhere in the mid forties now. There will be one last hoorah. Jody Cox, with DV8 Productions, is editing the documentary that he has been filming for the past 6 months. When the final cuts are made, we are planning a World Premier Event, possibly at the Rave Theatre, in East Ridge, where we hope to tell more stories about the trip and then debut the documentary film. That will also be a good time to give an accounting of the money raised and money spent. I will be in touch when we get all of that worked out. Until then, thanks so much for everything that all of our supporter did to help us out, and thanks to those who are still working. - Uncle Barry Wednesday, November 7. 2007

Hello to all! Sorry it's been so long. The past two days have been nuts.
I am finally home now and, in a way, it feels good to be back home. But in a way, I miss the road. What I miss most are my friends in Memphis, but I will see them all again in three weeks when I go back for surgery! The ride went great! We put in 403 miles and got to ride around St. Jude Hospital, which worked for me. I think the team learned a lot about each other. I know I, for one, did. I can't thank them enough for their time and the work that they put into this. Lily asked me late Sunday night, as we were standing outside just enjoying the cool air, what my next adventure was going to be. I told her, college. We are starting to look at schools, so be praying about that one. There's two I have in mind, one of those being the Christian college in Nashville, which the name I can't begin to spell, and the other one that I really want to go to is in Memphis. But I have to pray about them first to make sure that's what the Lord wants me to do. Well, I don't have much more to report but please keep checking the blog for other news. I hope to continue to use this blog from here on out to keep you up on everything. Thanks for your prayers - they, for sure, worked. Check back soon for another update on my life. - Samantha Tuesday, November 6. 2007Massive Media Round Up
Here is a massive round up of articles on the web about Samantha.
The Chattanoogan has this piece about her ride into Memphis. Here is a piece on Trevecca's site about the send off from there last week. Zach Wamp’s site mentions his visit to the Creative Discovery Museum send off. The Rome News Tribune has some photos of the spaghetti supper kickoff and the send off celebration. I imagine these were also in the Walker County Messenger, too. The Winchester Herald Chronicle has posted this article. The Tullahoma News ran this story. The Signal Mountain community website has an article here. The Flat River Band met Sam up in Nashville at the Bellvue BBQ Cook Off and talk about her on their MySpace blog. There is also a nice picture of Sam with the band. Of course, there are still articles up on the Chattanooga Times Free Press page here and here. An article unrelated to the ride but still mentioning Sam is posted here. In addition to the article listed above, the Chattanoogan has ran three other stories about Sam and they are here, here and here. Television stations that have ran the story include Nashville's WKRN and WTVF, Memphis’ WREG and Chattanooga's WTVC, WDSI, WRCB and WDEF here and here. One of WDEF’s producer has been following Sam’s ride on his blog. Included on this are video clips, put together by Jody Cox of DV8 Productions, that were part of Sam’s EPK, or electronic press kit, that we distributed to television news outlets. Nooga.com had an article about the ride here. FranklinIs has this article on the web from when Sam rode in the Harpeth River Ride. The Rush Miller Foundation has a piece about Sam and her new bike. The Chattanooga Bike Club site has an article up about her tour from back in the spring. Prior to the ride, Sam took part in Chattanooga’s GoFest. There is a small mention and a picture of Sam and a very big raccoon here. We also were contacting blogs to get people talking about the ride. One that mentioned it was Roger Kramer, a cyclist from the midwest. The Alablawg also called her “outstanding.†The Dallas Morning News cycling blog mentioned her ride here. The Memphis Hightailers also gave the ride a mention on their site. There are probably more than I am overlooking at this time. A few more are in the works, so I’ll keep everyone posted. If you know of an article that mentions Sam on the web you can simply reply to this post and post the link there. Also, be sure to keep checking the photo and video pages for updates. New photos and videos are added regularly. So, even if youv'e checked the Day One photo page, you may want to look again as new photos may have been added since your last visit! Thanks! -Tuck Monday, November 5. 2007
Very Happy, But Very Sad At The Same ... Posted by Samantha Gilley

Hello to every one!
Sorry I didn't post last night, I was having so much fun I forgot about it! But I couldn't sleep this morning so I thought I would do it now. I am sitting at my best friend's house in Memphis. She is also one of my doctors. Her name is Lily and you have probably heard me talk a lot about her. She held a big party for all the samsride.org team members last night and it was like a dream come true, with all my friends getting to meet her after hearing me talk about her for so many months. She has left for work now, though, and she left right before I got up, so I am a bit sad that I didn't get to wish her a good day. I will see her later on this afternoon though, so that's a good thing. I do, however, need you all to pray for three things today. The first one is about the hard time I have leaving Lily when we're done because we are so close. It makes me cry just about every time. As strange as that may sound, it's true. So please pray that it is not so hard on me this time, for I will see her again in three weeks. I am having surgery when we come back, so it won't be very long at all 'til I get to spend time with her again. The second one is to pray for her and her relationship with the Lord. I know she has told me in the past that she believes in Him and I am pretty sure she's a Christian, but I don't think she's where she needs to be with Him. I would give anything for her to be with the Lord, in the right place, because if theres one thing I never want to hear about or see, it's some one gong to Hell. No one should have to go through that. My last request of the hour is pray for good weather today. It has been great all through the week and, just to show you how good God is, tomorrow's high is 55 whereas todays high is 75. Now if that's not the Lord, then I don't know what is. It's calling for rain today but please pray it holds off 'til we get finished this afternoon. Well, I must go now. I'm starting to get a bit shaky. That normally means I am fighting back tears. Just pray for me, though, and I will be just fine. Thanks for all your support! And oh, before I forget, I told you all that last night there was going to be a surprise for all the pilots. There was! I spoke in front of everyone and told them how thankful I was for them helping me make this come true. Then I gave them all little stones with 'chase your dreams' on them, which is my message for everyone in life. I also told a funny story about them - that part was fun! At the end I surprised Lily with a funny story about her and giving her a bike jersey we all signed for her along the way! She really loved that! Last, I played the song, The River, by Garth Brooks. If you have never heard that song you should listen to it, because it packs a good story and message. Again thanks for all your prayers. I will post again tonight, probably from Nashville. - Samantha Monday, November 5. 2007Riding In Memphis
Since there was no update last night, I just wanted to update everyone on the ride...
I went out to Memphis yesterday and followed Sam on her ride from Whiteville over to Eads, which is just inside the Memphis city limits and she was doing great. A whole group of the pilots showed up to make the ride with her and posed at the Memphis city limits sign for a great picture. I'm sure it'll be posted in the photo gallery soon. Monday they'll pick up from there and finish the ride at Overton Park. There will be a police escort into town, they claim to keep someone from running over Sam, but as excited as she was yesterday, it's probably more to keep Sam from running over them! I figured she'd be at least a little tired and worn out from all the riding over the last week and half, but I'm not sure she is... I'll let Sam fill everyone in on the specifics, just wanted everyone to know she's doing great and still riding like she did on day one... amazing. - Tuck Sunday, November 4. 2007Adrenaline Rush
Hello to all! Sorry I didn't post yesterday, but we had no Internet service at the campground we parked at.
Tonight we are in Memphis, parked at a nice campground, and tomorrow we ride the bike into town. Monday is the final leg of Sam's ride and I have to say I am a bit sad that it's all starting to end. It's been loads of fun and I have learned a lot, but let's not think about the end just yet. There's still tomorrow, when the team meets back up to ride the last long leg together. And then there's the party tomorrow night at Lily's house, who is a wonderful friend and one of my doctors. And we can't forget Monday, the day it all happens. That's going to be so cool. I am, however, waiting for tomorrow. I miss Lily so much and we are so close but we don't get to see each other unless I come to St. Jude's for something. She is someone everyone should meet. She gives the best hugs and is just an all-around good friend. I will get one of those great hugs tomorrow and I am bouncing off the walls until then! Normally, at this time of night, I am about to crash because I am so tired. But not tonight. I know what is coming tomorrow and I can't wait. Please pray I get some good sleep tonight as I will need it for all that goes on tomorrow. Our ride today was mostly flat - a few hills but nothing we couldn't handle. And it wasn't too cold and it wasn't too hot. It was wonderful outside. I hope it's like that tomorrow. For the first time on the trip I wore shorts. That's a first for me anyway. I am hoping I can do the same thing tomorrow. I have to admit that I am proud of the muscles that I have built up in my legs. I am not sure if that's a good thing or not (lol). Oh well, I've got to be proud of something, I guess (smile). No, if you ask me, it has to do with the fact that I love to show off when it comes to my friends and my bike. These people up here have never seen the bike so this is even more special to me. I know this is the first, and maybe the last, time they will see the bike in person, so I want to do it up right. I told Barry the other day that I wanted to ride the bike to Lily's house, and he said that was fine. Today, he told me if I didn't want to, we didn't have to. I said, "no, no, no". I want to, very badly. He said no problem, we will do it then. He just wanted to make sure I wanted to do it. He knows I love to show off and he gives me chances to do that and helps me show off most of the time. Well I have rambled long enough. I had better be getting out of here and getting my thoughts together for tomorrow. I am planning a surprise for the team tomorrow night at the party that no one knows about. I would post it, but they might be reading, so I can take no chances. Thanks for your prayers. The ride isn't over yet, so keep them coming. Thanks and check back tomorrow for more. - Samantha Friday, November 2. 2007

Well, if I ever thought Tennessee had lots of hills, I confirmed that today!
We would no more finish flying down one hill before having to climb up another one. It was a very long and hard day today, but hard work does pay off. We put in 46 miles and our fastest time going down hill was 46.6 miles an hour. You talk about scary, on a bike. WOW, that will do it! But to say the least I had fun and feel tired, but good, because we put yet another day of hard work behind us. We were sitting at the dinner table tonight and Barry was talking about how Friday is his next day to pilot. When I informed him that tomorrow is Friday, he had to stop and think about it for a minute. The days are just flying by so fast, and before you know it, we will be in Memphis, having a party at a friend's house, and what fun that's going to be. Can't wait for that one to come. Mom is coming back up to join the crew tomorrow afternoon, so pray for safe travels and pray she doesn't fall asleep while driving. Also keep your prayers coming for the team here 'cause we can, for sure, feel the power of the Lord working. Just small things have happened that the Lord took care of beforehand, and how cool it is to be able to sit here with the other team members and talk about those stories. Tomorrow we have about three or four guys coming to ride with us, so that should be a lot of fun. Bike riding is always more fun when you have more then one person to talk with. Saturday will probably be just Barry and myself, but if any of the other pilots show up, then they will be riding with us as well. We will all ride Sunday in to Memphis together and have a party that night at my best friend's house, who happens to be my doctor as well. It's going to be great times and, for sure, something to look back on in a few years to come, and say, "WOW, how crazy we all were back then." My kids will love to hear this story, along with many others, when they are old enough to understand. Tomorrow is another day filled with hills and many miles, but it should be fun getting to know those new guys and just hanging out together. I will be back tomorrow night to give you an update on that ride and tell you how well Barry keeps up with me (lol). Thanks for your prayers, please keep them coming. We couldn't do this with out the Lord behind us the whole way. Have a great night and day and check back tomorrow night for more news on the ride. - Samantha Thursday, November 1. 2007Update From Sam's Mom
Sorry for the delayed update. I am so tired by the time I get home, I just want to sleep when I should be taking this time to clean house.
Sam and the crew are having the times of their lives. They spent Tuesday night at Trevecca Nazarene University. Lots of visitors from old, and new friends came by. On Wednesday morning a lot of the college students came out to bid their farewell to Sam. The university president gave them a check for $500! He also told Sam that she had better come back to Trevecca to go to school. Wouldn't that be nice? Then they went to downtown Nashville where the Hume-Fogg High school let out to line the streets of Broadway to cheer them on! Then they went past a middle school that did the same thing. And then they went to an elementary school where they let the kids out so Sam could stop and talk to them (Thanks Jodi!) Someone told me that a child asked Sam if, when she got to the hospital, would the doctors her fix her eyes so she could see? She told them, "No, I want see here on earth, but when I get to heaven I will see everything!" (It's been told that some of the old folks cried). And then someone asked her why all of these people were helping her and she said that it was because they loved her. More tears! Larry Lay (Sam calls him Larry 'Late') was her pilot yesterday. He's her sugar daddy! Then today our friend Chip and his dad, Robert, came up and rode her over the rolling hills. Tonight, I really don't know where they are! Sam says it's out in the boonies! They will cross the Tennessee River tomorrow and stop for the day Chickasaw state park, wherever that is! At Jack's Creek! I am leaving in the a.m. to drive and meet them. It sounds like a big weekend is scheduled for all! The say Sam is not tired but that some of the older folks are drinking a lot of Tylenol milkshakes! - Susie Wednesday, October 31. 2007
Hurricane Sam Strikes Nashville. Posted by Samantha Gilley

Well, I have done it yet again! I flew through another city in just a matter of hours.
I had a wonderful time in Nashville with friends and family cheering me along the way. I am still shocked at how well we are all doing - so great, and this is day five of nine. I am sorry I didn't post yesterday. I forgot and by the time I remembered I was already in bed and half asleep. But I knew you all would understand. We are all just hanging out in the RV tonight and we had dinner here instead of going out, seeing as there's really no place to eat out in this part of the state. I am not kidding when I say we are in the middle of nowhere (smile). Today's ride took a bit longer than normal but that's because we had a press conference this morning at Trevecca Nazarene College, in Nashville, where I got to speak. They gave 500 dollars to Samsride. I met the school president, who was very nice, and I really loved spending time getting to know everyone. I hung out with Nathan, my cousin, last night. He is always a laugh with the things he does. Today was busy, too. We left the college and rode to a high school in Nashville where the whole school came out to cheer us on! Then we went to another school, with younger kids, and stopped to meet them and talk for a few minutes. Thanks to our great friend, Jody Moore, we got to go to yet another school. I spoke to them and then they came out and lined the sidewalk as we left. Wow, what a day! That Jody makes me tired, but she's a load of fun. If you haven't met her, you're missing out on something very cool. I met Jody about two weeks ago and boy am I glad I did! She's just great and has put so much time into Samsride. Well, I should be getting off here for the night and heading off to bed. Uncle Barry says another long and good day ahead tomorrow. I will try my best to post again tomorrow night and let you know where we are. Keep in mind tomorrow marks the half-way point. I am getting really exhausted the closer we get. - Samantha Wednesday, October 31. 2007Sam Storms Nashville, Races Toward Memphis!
I just returned from following Sam and company around for the last two days.
As of this morning Sam was in great spirits and doing fine. The ride yesterday from Beechgrove into Nashville was somewhat rough due to what Eric, the pilot for yesterday's ride, called "rollers," a series of climbs, one after the other that finished the route for yesterday and the increased Nashville traffic. But, all made it through and Jody grabbed some great footage on the ride in and then in an interview with Sam and Eric down by the river in downtown Nashville. We also were able to get the meeting with the blind students on tape, which was a really special time for all involved. I know Sam was happy to see a lot of her Nashville area friends and I was glad to finally put some faces to names, but I'll let her elaborate on their visit to the RV. Bright and early this morning there was a send off from Trevecca with perhaps a hundred people or so seeing her off. Nashville media was in abundant supply as well, with the Tennesseean and WSMV represented. There was certainly more going on and few surprises, but I won't ruin those and will let Sam tell those stories to you... suffice it to say, she's doing great, but it does worry me to think about what she will want to do to try to top this. Go Sam! Wednesday, October 31. 2007Website Updates and Statistics
I'm not sure what kind of media hornet's nest Samantha got stirred up yesterday (Mon. 10/29), but the website statistics went crazy. We had the highest number of hits (33691) yesterday of any day since the website has been up! Today's numbers are not too far behind. I'm betting tomorrow's will really be high as we start getting all of the Nashville publicity.
We continue to get donations and wristband orders via the website. It's interesting to see the addresses from donors generally follow the areas Sam is riding through. Jody Cox has been feeding me his wonderful video clips and I have just finished creating a video gallery for all of them. And we're posting pictures in the photo gallery as we get them. So, keep checking the website for the latest info! - Danny Tuesday, October 30. 2007Monday Update (From Sam's Mom)
Yesterday went well also. They covered about 47 miles from Winchester into Beechgrove, which is somewhere near Shelbyville, I think.
They stopped at a bank in Tullahoma, where the folks had a big reception waiting and a nice donation of $500. Sam even had a fan club of teens waiting to talk to her and have pictures made. They all seem excited! Last night at the KOA campground, they had some visitors. Old friends of ours came by to visit for a while, which was nice. ( I am so mad that I am missing out on the fun!) Anyhow, today they are off to Nashville. I understand there is supposed to be press there and friends meeting them also. Tonight they will park at Trevecca Nazarene University where Uncle Barry's son is a student. The Tennessee School for the Blind is supposed to be bringing over students also. I hear that there is a young man who wants to meet her since he is blind and hearing impaired from the same type of cancer that she had. Keep praying. And pray for Eric as he makes his way there this morning to be her pilot for the day! - Susie |
